Choice Voucher Program
Department of Housing and Community Renewal Sponsored
Saratoga County Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Program
VCHC administers locally for New York State Department of Housing and Community Renewal (HCR) Housing Choice Voucher Program for Saratoga County.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance and home ownership option to extra low and very low income households in New York State.
The HCV program goal is to enable eligible house rent or purchase decent, safe, and sanitary housing available in the private market.
Housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family directly to the owner. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. The dollar amount of HCV Program Housing Assistance Payments will vary depending on the income of the family or individual and the approved rent/mortgage for the unit.
Participants are able to utilize their voucher to find suitable housing which may include single-family homes, mobile homes, townhouses and high rise apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program. This unit may include the family's present residence.
The unit must be found affordable and the rent reasonable when compared to other rentals in the surrounding area. Rental units must meet minimum housing quality standards of health and safety, as determined by DHCR and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Elibility
Eligibility for a housing voucher is determined by VCHC based on the total annual gross income and family size and is limited to US citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status.
Eligibility limits are subject to change and a higher percentage of vouchers must be given to families with extra low income as compared to families with very low income.
Currently the wait list is closed for the HCR Saratoga County Housing Choice Voucher program as vouchers are limited and the wait time may exceed 5 years.
The wait lists are open for to two HCR subsidized housing projects. Twelve one-bedroom units are located in Burnt Hills and eight one-bedroom units are located in Rexford.
Individuals must meet both income criteria and must be 55 years old or older and/or disabled.
Individuals must apply and be approved by project management separately.
VCHC is the Public Housing Authority for the Town of Wilton Section 8 Program. Applicants need not be in the Town of Wilton when they apply, however they must meet the one year resident requirement to move to the Town of Wilton if a voucher is issued.
